What is Fibromyalgia?

The term fibromyalgia has been derived from the Latin and Greek words; in which fibra is Latin word which means fiber and the Greek words myo and algos stands for pain and muscle respectively. This disorder has been the object of study since the 1800s and earlier it was also called as muscular rheumatism and fibrositis. But the current name has been given to the condition by Muhammad Yunus and his colleagues in 1981. The meaning thus refers to the pain in the muscles and the tissues in the body. The acronyms like FM or FMS are also sometimes used to indicate the disorder. The condition of fibromyalgia is characterized by pain in the different parts of the body. The pain may be located in specific parts of the body like the joints and bones. The sufferer may also feel fatigue. The study about fibromyalgia suggests that the genes may be the carriers of the disorder. Women are more at the risk of having fibromyalgia than men and the ratio confirms the fact, the ration for fibromyalgia is 9:1 which has been declared by the American College of Rheumatology. The disorder of fibromyalgia is found in two to three percent of the total population. The condition affects persons who are in the age group of twenty to fifty years. The disorder has not yet been fully understood by scientists and investigators and the fortunate thing about this disorder is that it does not develop over a period of time and is not very serious at all.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of the fibromyalgia condition are the patient’s sensitivity to any type mild or simple touch. The sufferer of fibromyalgia is chronic pain in the various regions of the body. The skin in the patients of fibromyalgia becomes very sensitive as well; the skin may experience a needle like sharp tingling. Other signs of this disease include pain in the nerves, weakness in the joints of the body, and continued pain in the muscles. The affected person also has a sleep disturbance and the condition of insomnia is the classic symptom of fibromyalgia.

The diagnosis is fibromyalgia is not very well defined but the American college of rheumatology has laid down certain criteria for the diagnosis of fibromyalgia which are known as the ACR 1990, since the rules were laid down in 1990. The criteria lays stress on the condition of widespread pain which can continue for three months or more than that. There are also 18 tender points by which the diagnosis can be done.
